As a Yard Operative / HGV Trainee at our busy Merton branch, you will support the smooth operation of our yard and warehouse while undertaking comprehensive training to become a qualified HGV Driver. Main Responsibilities for Yard Operatives and HGV Trainees
- Assist customers and colleagues in the yard, providing friendly and professional service at all times.
- Safely load, unload, and move stock and materials, following all Health & Safety guidelines.
- Keep the yard, warehouse, and vehicles tidy, organised, and free of hazards.
- Support picking, packing, and preparation of deliveries for our customers.
- Carry out regular stock checks and report any discrepancies promptly.
- Work towards gaining an HGV licence, undertaking on-the-job and external training as required.
- Undertake daily vehicle and equipment checks under supervision, learning best practice throughout.
- Collaborate closely with the driving and warehouse teams to ensure efficient branch operations.
- Follow all Lawsons’ procedures and policies and maintain high standards of professionalism and customer care.
- Undertake other reasonable duties to support branch needs as required by management.
Required Skills, Experience, and Qualities for Yard Operatives / HGV Trainees
- Reliable, punctual, and enthusiastic team player with a desire to learn and develop new skills.
- Strong communication skills and a positive, proactive attitude towards customer service.
- Good level of fitness and willingness to undertake manual handling tasks.
- Keen attention to detail and commitment to maintaining safety and tidiness standards.
- Full UK driving licence (category B) is essential to progress onto HGV training.
- Previous experience in a similar yard, warehouse, retail, or construction environment is advantageous, but not required.
- Existing forklift licence is useful; if not held, full training will be provided.
- Ability to follow instructions, learn new skills, and work effectively both independently and as part of a diverse team.
