Van Driver / HGV Cover Job Purpose -
As a Van Driver with HGV Cover at Lawsons, you will be responsible for delivering orders accurately and efficiently to our valued customers, ensuring the highest level of service at all times. You will also provide cover for HGV drivers when required. You will be safety-conscious, customer-focused, and a key ambassador for Lawsons, representing our brand professionally on every delivery.
Branch Location - Unit 16, Adams Industrial Estate, St Johns Rd, New Malden, KT3 3SQ.
Working hours - 44.5 hours = Monday - Friday 06:30 - 16:00, plus 1 in 2 Saturday's 08.00 - 12.00
Key Responsibilities for Van Drivers and HGV Cover
- Deliver customers’ goods accurately, safely, and in a timely manner using company vehicles (Van and HGV cover as needed).
- Provide excellent customer service at every point of delivery and collection.
- Check loads are secure and unloaded in line with customer requirements and Health & Safety standards.
- Ensure all delivery paperwork is completed accurately and returned to the branch.
- Carry out daily vehicle checks, reporting any defects or issues promptly.
- Support the yard and warehouse teams when not driving, including assisting with picking, packing, and loading.
- Work in accordance with company procedures, policies, and best practices, especially in regard to Health & Safety.
- Promote and maintain high standards of tidiness, organisation, and cleanliness in vehicles and the yard area.
- Carry out any other reasonable task as requested by management to support smooth branch operations.
Skills and Experience Required for Van Driver / HGV Cover Jobs
- Full UK Driving Licence (essential).
- Category C/ HGV Class 2 licence and valid CPC (essential for HGV cover).
- Previous experience as a delivery driver, preferably within the builders’ merchant, construction, or similar sector.
- Good geographical knowledge of London and the South East.
- A valid and up-to-date forklift licence is highly desirable.
- Excellent customer service skills, polite and professional manner.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to complete paperwork accurately.
- Good numeracy and written communication skills.
- Ability to work under pressure, both independently and as part of a team.
- Physically fit and comfortable with manual handling duties.
- Punctual, reliable, and committed to high standards of Health & Safety adherence.
