Lawsons, the UK’s largest independent fencing, timber and builders’ merchant, is seeking a dedicated and motivated Yard Operative to join our busy Letchworth branch. Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Accurate picking, packing and loading of goods for customer collections and deliveries.
- Efficient unloading of incoming deliveries and correct storage of products within the yard and warehouse.
- Effective replenishment of stock, ensuring items are rotated and displayed to company standards.
- Completion of relevant paperwork for goods movement and health & safety checks.
- Providing excellent service to all customers, assisting with queries and supporting their needs in the yard.
- Maintaining a tidy, organised and hazard-free yard and warehouse at all times.
- Operating forklifts, mechanical equipment and machinery safely (forklift licence required).
- Reporting damaged stock or safety concerns to management swiftly and accurately.
- Supporting regular stock counts and working to minimise product losses.
- Upholding Lawsons’ best practice, customer service, health & safety, and company policy standards at all times.
Essential Candidate Requirements
- Previous experience in yard or warehouse roles within builders merchants (essential).
- Live and valid forklift truck licence (essential).
- A Full UK Driving License (essential)
- Good product knowledge of timber, building, and fencing materials is highly desirable.
- Strong team player with the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for dealing with trade and retail customers.
- Ability to spot and resolve problems efficiently.
- Strong attention to detail and basic numeracy skills.
- Good time management and the ability to follow procedures precisely.
- Commitment to maintaining the highest standards of tidiness, organisation, and safety in the yard.
Working Hours and Location
- Full Time, 44.5 hours working Monday to Friday plus alternate Saturday mornings (08:00–12:00)

Salary and Employee Benefits
- Competitive salary: £29,000 – £31,000 depending on experience
