General Operative Careers – Colney Heath Steels
As a General Operative at Lawsons Colney Heath Steels, you will join a dynamic team at the heart of our steel operations. This essential role involves assisting with the handling, storage, and preparation of steel and building materials, whilst upholding our standards of excellent customer service and a safe working environment.
Main Responsibilities – General Operatives in Steel & Building Materials
- Safely load, unload, and move steel products and building materials within the branch and yard.
- Assist with the processing, cutting, and preparation of steel to meet customer requirements (training provided where necessary).
- Identify, pick, and prepare materials for delivery or collection, ensuring accuracy and efficiency.
- Keep the yard and warehouse areas tidy, organised, and compliant with Health & Safety standards at all times.
- Help maintain accurate stock records and report any discrepancies to your supervisor or manager.
- Deliver outstanding customer service to all visitors, supporting customers to locate and retrieve their orders.
- Operate manual handling equipment and, if licensed, forklifts; be willing to undertake relevant training as required.
- Support your team and contribute positively to a collaborative, respectful workplace.
Essential Skills, Experience and Attributes – General Operative, Colney Heath Steels
- Experience in a manual, outdoor, or warehouse-based role is essential; knowledge of steel products or builders’ merchant environment is desirable.
- Valid forklift licence is highly desirable, but not essential – training can be provided for the right candidate.
- Ability to work safely and efficiently, including appropriate manual handling and lifting.
- Basic numeracy, attention to detail, and willingness to learn new skills relating to steel processing and materials handling.
- Reliable, positive attitude with a focus on teamwork and delivering excellent service to customers and colleagues from all backgrounds.
- Keen awareness of Health & Safety best practice and willingness to follow all company policies and procedures.
Working Hours, Pay, and Benefits for General Operative Jobs – Colney Heath Steels
- Permanent, full-time position (Monday to Friday, with alternate Saturday mornings on a 1-in-2 rota).
- Competitive annual salary reflecting experience and skills (29,000)
- 25 days’ paid holiday, plus 8 bank holidays and an additional celebration day.
