Role Overview
We are recruiting an Assistant Yard Manager to join our Whetstone branch. This is a hands-on role based in-branch, supporting the Yard Manager to ensure safe, efficient and commercial operation of the yard, delivering excellent customer service and assisting with team supervision across yard, delivery and counter functions.
Key Responsibilities
Support the Yard Manager in the day-to-day running of the yard, ensuring operations run smoothly and safely.
Supervise, coach and assist yard operatives and delivery staff to maintain high standards of performance and conduct.
Coordinate and prioritise loading, unloading and customer collections to meet service levels and maximise efficiency.
Carry out and record vehicle, plant and equipment checks; report defects and ensure timely maintenance.
Assist with planning deliveries and vehicle allocation in collaboration with the transport team to optimise routes and utilisation.
Deliver excellent customer service in-branch and on the yard, offering product knowledge and resolving issues promptly and professionally.
Maintain accurate stock records, assist with stock counts and support ordering and merchandising activities as required.
Promote and enforce health and safety policies, complete risk assessments and ensure correct use of PPE and safe working practices at all times.
Support recruitment, training and induction of new yard colleagues and contribute to performance reviews and ongoing development.
Identify opportunities for process improvements, cost savings and efficiency gains and assist with local implementation.
Person Specification
Experience working in a yard, distribution or builders’ merchant environment (essential).
Previous supervisory or team lead experience desirable with the ability to motivate and support colleagues.
Practical knowledge of safe manual handling, loading/unloading procedures and basic plant/vehicle checks.
Good organisational and time management skills with the ability to prioritise a varied workload.
Strong customer service focus with clear and professional communication skills.
IT literate with the ability to use branch systems, handheld devices or basic office software.
Full UK driving licence desirable. Forklift counterbalance and reach truck accreditation advantageous; training can be provided where appropriate.

Working Hours, Salary and Benefits
Full-time, permanent position based at our Whetstone branch.
Typical hours Monday to Friday between 7.00 - 17.00 with 1 in 3 Saturdays working 08.00 - 12.00.
Competitive salary dependent on experience (£31,000 - £34,000)
25 days holiday per year plus bank holidays and an additional celebration day, rising with service in line with company policy.
