The Role
We are recruiting an Assistant Yard Manager on a permanent basis at our Edmonton branch. This is a hands-on, customer-facing role supporting the Branch Yard Manager to ensure smooth yard operations, efficient stock handling and excellent service to trade and retail customers. You will assist with organising deliveries and collections, supervising yard activities, maintaining stock accuracy and ensuring compliance with Health & Safety procedures. The role involves physical handling of timber, fencing and builders’ merchant products, accurate paperwork and close working with branch colleagues.
Working Hours
This is a full-time, permanent position. Typical hours are Monday to Friday and 1 in 2 Saturday mornings working 08.00 - 12.00.

Key Accountabilities
Support the Yard Manager in day-to-day yard operations, ensuring a safe, tidy and efficient working environment.
Assist with receiving, checking and storing inbound deliveries, ensuring goods are correctly recorded and stacked.
Help organise and prepare customer orders for collection or delivery, including liaising with drivers and planning loading priorities.
Carry out regular stock checks and assist with stock control processes to maintain inventory accuracy.
Ensure all yard activities comply with company Health & Safety procedures, use appropriate PPE and apply safe manual handling techniques.
Operate forklifts or other yard equipment where trained and authorised, completing pre-use checks and reporting defects promptly.
Supervise and assist yard colleagues and temporary staff, providing clear instruction and support.
Accurately complete paperwork and electronic records relating to stock movements, deliveries and returns.
Provide excellent customer service to customers attending the yard, representing Lawsons professionally and courteously.
Report any damaged or compromised products and escalate customer queries to the Yard Manager as appropriate.
Carry out any other reasonable tasks as requested by your line manager.

Previous management experience in a yard, warehouse or builders’ merchants environment (essential).
Proven ability to work in a physically demanding role with safe manual handling knowledge (essential).
Forklift licence and experience operating plant or material handling equipment (desirable).
Good organisational skills with the ability to prioritise and work to deadlines.
Strong communication and team working skills, with a professional customer-focused approach.
Basic numeracy and literacy to complete stock records and paperwork accurately.
Willingness to learn supervisory tasks and assist with training others.
Be vigilant and report any Health & Safety issues to the Line Manager immediately.
